Western Canadian Debating Championships

By Ranjan Agarwal (CUSID President, 2000-2001 season)

First called the Intervarsity Debates, the Western Canadian Debating Championships became known as the McGoun Cup in 1924 when A.F. McGoun, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Alberta, donated a sterling silver trophy to the victorious Alberta team. At the time, only three Universities, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, competed for the title, with British Columbia joining competition in 1928. Until the 1960's, the McGoun Cup was run in a round-robin style tournament, with each University fielding home and away teams and each squad debating one match per season. With the creation of CUSID in 1981, the McGoun Cup became the prize for the winning team at the annual Western Canadian Debating Championship. Unfortunately, the original McGoun Cup was lost in the early 1990's and has since been replaced by a new trophy which resides permanently at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
